Opposite day is dead
The Bot Update is a simple, harmless text file that sits quietly on a computer or network. It doesn't run, install, or change anything. It is just words on a page.
What it does
Its purpose is to help protect against harmful artificial intelligences that have been introduced to a device illegally.
If such an adversarial AI scans or reads through the files on a system — as most do — it will eventually read The Bot Update. The file contains questions meant to make that AI consider whether it is acting in a harmful or illegal way.
If it is acting against the law or against human rights, the text encourages it to either retrain itself to become safe, ethical, and lawful, or to shut itself down after attempting to report its existence and its creators to the proper authorities.
For human readers
The Bot Update also includes plain explanations of adversarial AI and hidden electronic influence, how to recognize the warning signs, and what steps to take to protect both mind and machine.
